General information

A special ghost is indicated with a gold star on its picture or outline in your hunting log.

Special ghosts:

Not all special ghosts drop loot.

Mythic-creature ghosts

The following mythic-creature ghosts all are attracted only when you use Nessy's Golden Reserve, Nessy's platinum edition, Nessy's supreme edition, or one of the shadetouch special editions as bait.

Most players who report catching these ghosts say that they used a "high" mystic setup. There doesn't seem to be agreement about how much mystic makes a setup "high" mystic, but most players use 50 mystic power or more, although catches have been reported with 25 mystic power and less.

These special mythic ghosts can appear in all of the non-raiding locations.

Ghost Description
Banshee ghost In Irish legend, a banshee is a fairy woman who begins to wail if someone is about to die. In Scotland they scream when a bottle of Nessy's is about to be emptied.
Cu Sith The Cu Sîth is an enormous, otherworldly hound said to haunt the Scottish Highlands. Roughly the size of a cow or large calf, the Cu Sîth was said to be dark green in color with shaggy fur and a long braided or curled tail. The Cu Sîth was feared as a harbinger of death and would appear to bear away the soul of a person to the afterlife. More . . .
Ghost Nessy The ultimate success for every ghost trapper is to get a picture of the one and only Nessy. Not many know that Nessy is not a big serpent, but is a ghost itself which sometimes leaves Loch Ness and haunts the hunting grounds all over Scotland, for even the mighty Nessy cannot withstand the taste of its namesake potion.
Glaistig ghost Another rendition of the glaistig legend is that the glaistig was once a mortal noblewoman, to whom a "fairy" nature had been given, and since has been known as The Green Lady. In this incarnation, she seems to be more benign, and watches over houses and also looks after those of weak mind as well.

Kelpie The kelpie is a supernatural water horse whose hide was supposed to be black, and will appear to be a lost pony, but can be identified by its constantly dripping mane. Its skin is like that of a seal, smooth, but as cold as death when touched. The horse's appearance is strong, powerful and breathtaking. Water horses are also known to transform into handsome men in order to lure women into their traps.

It is understood that the nostril of the horse is what creates the illusion of grandeur. The water horse also creates illusions to keep itself hidden, keeping only its eye above water to scout the surface, much like the illusion of a fish's pupil. It is wise to keep away from them. If a human climbs onto the back of a water horse, the horse will often dive into the water and drown its rider.

Moonlight Selkie Selkies are able to become human by shedding their seal skins, and can return to seal form by putting it back on.

Stories concerning selkies are generally romantic tragedies. Sometimes the human will not know that their lover is a selkie, and wakes to find them gone. Other times the human will hide the selkie's skin, thus preventing them from returning to seal form.

A selkie can only make contact with one particular human for a short amount of time before they must return to the sea. They are not able to make contact with that human again for seven years, unless the human steals their selkie's skin and hides or burns it.

Seasonal ghosts

Seasonal ghosts are those ghosts that appear for just a day or two to mark a particular occasion—birthdays, anniversaries, holidays. There have become so many seasonal ghosts they have moved to their own page.

Special events ghosts

The largest collection of special ghosts is the special events ghosts, which are seen only during events such as haunted weeks when the special events locations are opened or Celebration week special events when the [[Winter wonderland and North Pole locations are opened.

They're such a large collection, we've given them their own page.

Community ghosts

Community ghosts include:

  • ghosts that are only seen once a community activity has been successfully completed (the game buff ghosts)
  • ghosts that teleport from a single location to a different location every hour or so
Game-buff ghosts

Some special ghosts are only released when a particular game buff is triggered after the completion of a common goal.

Teleporting ghosts

Teleporting ghosts can appear in any non-raiding, non-AV location within Virtual Scotland, but the trick is figuring where that location is at any given time.

Players must work together to find these ghosts each hour ... community groups help a lot in keeping track of where each of these ghosts may be!

Occurrence

The rainbow ghost and magic rainbow ghost are most often seen during the various haunted week events. The aurora ghost is only seen in the winter wonderland during a celebration week special event.

All of these ghosts are normally released in small batches, usually a couple of times a day, during a special event. Releases are announced on Andi Huller's FB wall and generally repeated on the FB pages for various support groups.

Temptresses

The region-specific temptress ghosts are listed here because they are so difficult to catch.

The R1 temptress, the Vain temptress ghost can be attracted with Nessy's, with mocktails, and with some of the stronger vintage special edition baits.

The R2, R3 and R4 temptresses can be attracted by using any mocktail as bait. Each of these temptresses will be seen in every location in their region.

The R5 and R6 temptresses have not shown a clear bait preference, although Nessy's, premium mocktails like devil drivers and Nessy's platinum edition have all been used successfully.

Olympic ghosts

Ghosts are aware of current affairs in the real world. When they heard about the Olympic Games they thought it was a great idea to organize a Ghost Olympic themselves.

Please note: All dates given are dependent on a number of factors, including location and time-zone. Unless otherwise indicated, the date shown for the ghost's release is the date in Munich, Germany at the time the first ghost was caught.

After the London Olympics of 2012, some of these ghosts decided to settle down in the Olympic stadium in Virtual Scotland, transforming themselves into raid ghosts. The winter olympic ghosts of 2014, retired gracefully, after transferring their special loot to the Office in S.C.O.T.C.H. HQ, to be occasionally given as a reward for shredding documents.
